ST-LAZARE CHALLENGE 2000
St-Lazare, QC
2 July 2000
Communications event co-ordinator: Ken VE2EXC
The St-Lazare Challenge was a 40 mile competitive trail ride. There were two courses, one for novices of 25 miles (allowed time five hours and fifteen minutes) and advanced - 40 miles (time allowed seven hours and fifteen minutes) - there were a total of 33 competitors. Briefing by Ken was at 07:30 am (EDT) with everyone in position by 08:00 am.
Out stations were required to keep a log of rider "bib" numbers and times as they passed their checkpoint. Control advised when the riders started and then it was up to the out stations to monitor and keep track of the flow. Control was asked several times by either vets or the organizers where a certain rider was on the course - particularly the novice riders and was able to report back their progress and their location. It was a long day, with Jacques VE2CT and François, VE2AAY being the last radio operators to close down their position. Lunch was provided by the organizers, which we ate at our checkpoints and the organizers also provided a supper (BBQ chicken and all the trimmings, including strawberry shortcake) for the competitors and all the volunteers. An added benefit all volunteers got a "St-Lazare Challenge" T-shirt. It was a great day and those amateurs who stayed for the BBQ didn't leave until 06:30 pm. The weather cooperated which was great considering that a very rainy day had been forecasted - it rained elsewhere, but not on us!
Thanks go out to the following amateur radio operators who participated under the VE2LZR group banner: The control station was manned by Fred Hart, VE2LSQ and he was assisted by Shirley Ovans, VE2SMO and Croyden Snowdon, VA2CLS.
